A note from Evie

The first time I ever scoured a fleece, I completely messed it up. It was a Shetland fleece and I dunked it in boiling water with several glugs of dish soap so many times I lost count. That poor fleece came out over scoured, dry, brittle, and in some places felted.

My next attempt was a swing in the other direction. I under scoured my fleece and ended up carding and spinning wool basically "in the grease". Which was not what I was going for.

I just wanted to spin a nice, clean, fluffy fleece!

After looking for information about scouring fleece, I came away more confused. Just like spinning, everyone seemed to have a different way they like to scour their wool and I didn't know what was going to work for me. The thing I was missing at the time was understanding why we do certain things when we scour wool.

With this workshop, I'm going to walk you through my process of scouring a heavy lanolin fine wool. I will explain why I do each step during the process. My goal is for you to understand why each step of scouring matters and use that knowledge to create your own personalized process of scouring that works for you and the needs of your fleece. This will get you to that clean, fluffy, fleece you've been waiting to spin, so let's get scouring!
